Antioch is a suburb of Oakland and San Francisco in Contra Costa County, California. With a population of 100,631 (2005), Antioch is largely a bedroom community. As the Bay Area continues to grow, real estate prices drive many people out of larger cities into these smaller, more affordable communities. Under such circumstances, Antioch has seen rapid growth over the past three decades.
Located on the San Joaquin River, the city has a wealth of maritime activities. There is a municipal marina as well as many other private marinas, yacht clubs and boatyards. There are also two public fishing piers, as well as fishing opportunities along the river. Many people also fish in San Pablo Bay, which is world-famous for its giant squid. For those who prefer other water-related activities, the Prewett Family Water Park is fun for children and parents alike.
For performing arts events in Antioch, look no further than El Campanil Theatre in downtown Antioch. Here you can see theater, music, dance, and films, as well as other community productions and performances. The Antioch Historical Society Museum and the Rivertown Art Center are both historic locations and popular attractions. The Contra Costa County Fair, the Delta Blues Festival and the Saturday Summer Concert series are a few popular local events. Many of these events are put on by the Arts and Cultural Foundation of Antioch, which also hosts other fun annual festivities such as Holiday DeLights.
