Located in Jackson County, Lee's Summit is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. The city has a population of 80,338 (2005). Once named the Town of Strother, which consisted of 11 blocks along the Mississippi Pacific Railroad tracks, Lee's Summit is now 65 square miles of progressive, yet laid-back city. The surrounding open, rolling prairie is reflective of the nature of the town: restful and family-friendly, yet dynamic and full of life.
Lee's Summit is home to the Summit Technology Center, a branch campus of the University of Central Missouri, as well as Longview Community College. Downtown Lee's Summit is currently undergoing a streetscape project known as "Diggin It," which will provide the city with a new look and improved infrastructure. With ample free parking and lots going on, the ongoing work in Downtown will have very little effect on your ability to enjoy the city. Be sure to look for downtown events such as the Art Detour and the Third Thursdays on Third (a downtown art walk) among others.
For golfers, be sure to visit one of Lee's Summit's public golf courses for a relaxing afternoon of golf; or, for family-oriented activities head on over to Family Golf Park or Paradise Park which features not only miniature golf but also hayrides, picnic areas, batting cages and go-carts. Another outdoor must is Powell Garden's 915 acres of beautiful botanical gardens. Visitors and locals alike are drawn towards the many music, family and craft fairs held annually in Lee's Summit. Oktoberfest and Old Tyme Days Festival are only two examples of the diverse and entertaining events that the city has to offer.
