Sacramento, CA (Population: 456,441)

As the state capital of California, Sacramento is also the seat of Sacramento County in the state's expansive Central Valley. Sacramento was once a major distribution point during the California Gold Rush as a central point for the Pony Express, the First Transcontinental Railroad as well as for stagecoaches, riverboats and the telegraph. "Old Sacramento" is still in existence currently and is very much a tourist site. Today, it has been lauded as one of the five "most liveable cities" as well as one of the best integrated. Known both for its diversity and its harmonious living, Sacramento has quickly become a very desirable place to live.

Sacramento's economy is largely supported by government and transportation jobs. Other prominent sectors of employment include education, health services, leisure and tourism, and technology companies such as Hewlett-Packard and Intel. The city is home to Sacramento State, one of the California State Universities as well as various other private and two-year colleges such as the University of Sacramento and the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. The NBA's Sacramento Kings and the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs both call this area home. The Sacramento Mile is a national flat-track motorcycle racing event while the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail attracts cyclists and equestrians from all over the state. Also a statewide attraction, the California State Fair is held here each year at the end of summer.

The Crocker Art Museum is the oldest public art museum west of the Mississippi river. The California State Railroad Museum, which is located in Old Sacramento is a historically-based museum with steam locomotives that visitors can ride. The Community Center Theatre hosts the Sacramento Ballet, the Sacramento Philharmonic and the Sacramento Opera. The official dance school is the Deane Dance Center. Every Memorial Day weekend, the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee is held with thousands of Jazz fans from all of the world coming in for this event. The Sacramento French Film Festival is held each year in July. Another summer film festival is the Trash Film Orgy which is dedicated to absurd, horror, monster and B-movies.
