The city of Thousand Oaks, named after the many oak trees that grace the area, is located in Ventura County, and is commonly referred to as
T.O. by its residents. Incorporated in 1964, Thousand Oaks is known for being an entirely planned community from the very beginning. It is also one of few cities that have kept in line with its original plans, making for less traffic congestion and pollution. Thousand Oaks is also well known for the value it places on open space. Due to these reasons as well as the city's desirable location, property values continue to appreciate significantly in Thousand Oaks.
Downtown Thousand Oaks centers around the Janss Marketplace mall, The Oaks mall and W. Thousand Oaks Boulevard. However, most of the city's inhabitants live in large suburban areas a distance from the city center. Thousand Oaks consistently remains one of the safest large cities in the United States. In annual surveys, the city almost always ranks first or second safest in cities with 100,000-499,999 residents.
In terms of recreation, organized athletics for children and teenagers is a major community focus in Thousand Oaks. Thousands of participants and their parents are engaged every year in sports such as AYSO soccer, Conejo Youth Basketball, Pop Warner football, Little League baseball, girl's softball, swim team leagues, ice hockey, lacrosse and field hockey. In professional sports, Thousand Oaks is home to Sherwood Country Club, where Tiger Woods hosts an annual golf tournament.
