Vallejo is located in Solano County and has an approximate population of 119,593. Situated on the northern shore of San Pablo Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area, Vallejo has been a popular relocation spot for people moving from San Francisco to Vallejo’s downtown Victorian homes and waterfront areas near Mare Island. Vallejo contains two historic neighborhoods as well as multiple newer “manor” neighborhoods.
Vallejo is home to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom theme park, the non-operative Mare Island Naval Shipyard, the California Maritime Academy (part of the CSU system) and Touro University on Mare Island. Other points of interest in and around Vallejo include numerous prestigious golf courses, the Solano County Fairgrounds, Mare Island Historic Park, the Napa Valley Wine Train, Jelly Belly Candy Company, Scandia Family Center and Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum. Major annual events in the city include the Vallejo Jazz, Art and Wine Festival and the Bay Area’s only three-day birding event, the San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival.
Vallejo has much to offer in terms of performing and visual arts, such as the Vallejo Symphony, Vallejo Music Theatre and the Fetterly Gallery, to name a few. The Hyphy music scene can attribute some of its roots to Vallejo, along with Oakland and Richmond. Such artists as Mac Dre and E-40 are from Vallejo, and have been major contributors to this unique genre primarily associated with up-tempo West Coast hip hop beats.
